CSW NGO Consultation Day 2011

Women from various parts of the world gathered in New York today at the salvation army building for the opening of the 55th session of CSW NGO Consultation Day. The building was filled with sounds of many languages. Diversity seemed to be the norm of the day but there was a clear unison of purpose - empowerment of women in all parts of the world. The inspiring key note address by Ms. Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director and Under-Secretary for UN Women set the tone of the day; there was much to learn by talking to NGOs from other parts of the world sharing their celebrations and challenges. I found myself connecting with representatives from Nicaragua with my limited Spanish; meeting women working in rural India helping develop marketable skills for employment and economic empowerment. There were opportunities to observe, listen, network and create new links. CSW since its inception has provided forum for women to discuss, debate and influence policy through their active engagement. It was a great learning experience to witness the energy and be part of the process.
