Escapees’ Story: North Korea

Situation in North Korea from experts’ view
To remain in the luxurious life style, Kim’s family uses North Korean people as slaves inside of their country and export them as slaves. 80% of the escapees don’t obtain a high school diploma and the majority of them are rural women.  People in North Korea are suffering from famine and high mortality (the mortality rate in North Korea is 19 times higher than in South Korea). Additionally, the population mobility is very low due to the government’s regulation on it. Only 5% of people migrated to other counties in the past 5 years. Women are the most vulnerable group which suffers from violence and their culture. For example, holding hands is a taboo in North Korea, but rape is common.

Escapees’ Story

  • First escapee

She escaped North Korea in 2010 and is living in South Korea. She dictated that they never had enough rice to eat at the rural area of North Korea. Her younger sister was only 80 pounds when she was attending high school. She couldn’t attend college because it was not affordable for her family and the only thing they could do was crying with anger. Afterwards she had to escape to China to support her family. Poison was carried with her during the escaping journey. Escapees who only aim to earn money in China could face 2 years jail time if they get caught. But they could face life long prison punishment if they get caught by escaping to South Korea, USA etc. Eventually she made her way to freedom and is attending university in South Korea. She shared her appreciation of the well-designed resettlement policy which helped her a lot to fit in the new environment. Before she was taught by the North Korean government and believed that South Korea is a terrible country which full of homeless people. But now she regards South Korea as the paradise where she could have three meals a day, freedom of choice, and political freedom as well.

  • Second escapee:

She escaped in 2005 and is living in USA currently. She is a woman who survived through hell: poverty, hunger, an irresponsible husband, lost all her children, sold by human trafficker to a Chinese farmer and transferred from one man to another, raped and beaten by North Korean border guards…
